About the Society

액튼소사이어티

액튼소사이어티(Acton Society)는 국내의 호주 대학 출신 연구자 및 학생들을 중심으로 전환기 국제사회의 변화와 위기를 탐구하는 연구회입니다. 본 연구회는 소규모 공부모임을 통해 정치, 안보, 경제, 사회, 환경 등의 분야에서 나타나는 다양한 이슈들을 함께 고민함으로써 건설적 논의의 장을 만들어가고 있습니다.

본 연구회는 2014년 호주국립대학교(Australian National University) 한인 학부 재학생들이 캔버라 액튼 캠퍼스에서 결성·운영한 액튼아시아태평양포럼(Acton Forum for Asia Pacific Affairs)이라는 소규모 공부모임으로 시작되었으며, 현재는 한국 서울에서 액튼소사이어티라는 이름으로 그 활동을 이어가고 있습니다.

본 연구회는 다음의 세 가지 목표를 달성하고자 합니다.

첫째, 현대 국제사회의 변화와 위기를 바라보는 다양한 시각을 수용하고,

둘째, 국제사회의 빠르고 복잡한 변화를 읽어내는 대안적 시각을 제시하며,

셋째, 연구회 구성원 간 네트워크를 구축 및 발전시켜 나가고자 합니다.

본 연구회는 참여구성원들이 다양한 시각과 목소리를 자유롭게 나눌 수 있는 플랫폼을 마련하기 위해 지속적인 노력을 기울일 것입니다.

연혁

2014년 3월: 호주국립대학교 한인 학부생 공부모임 액튼아시아태평양포럼 (Acton Forum for Asia Pacific Affairs, 액튼포럼) 결성
2017년 12월: 액튼아시아태평양포럼 활동 잠정 중단
2019년 3월: 호주국립대학교 국제문제연구 동문회 (Australian National University Alumni Society for International Affairs, ANU ASIA) 결성
2019년 9월: 호주국제관계연구동문회 (Australia Alumni Society for International Relations, AASIR)로 개명
2020년 8월: 액튼소사이어티 (Acton Society)로 개명

The Acton Society

The Acton Society is a study group led by Australian university graduates in South Korea and dedicated to studying major challenges facing the international society. The Society aims to contribute to academic debates over political, security, economic, societal, and environmental issues in a new, transformative era.

The Society originally begun as a student-run, non-profit blog called the Acton Forum for Asia Pacific Affairs, which was formed in 2014 by a small group of Korean undergraduate students at the Australian National University‘s Acton campus in Canberra, Australia. It is now operating in Seoul, South Korea.

The Society aims to achieve the following objectives:

First, to acknowledge and embrace diverse perspectives on major challenges facing the world.

Second, to suggest alternative ways of understanding the rapid and complex changes occurring in international society.

Third, to build and enhance connectivity among members of the Society.

History

2014, March: Acton Forum for Asia Pacific Affairs was formed.
2017, December: Acton Forum for Asia Pacific Affairs ceased its activities.
2019, March: Australian National University Alumni Society for International Affairs (ANU ASIA) was formed.
2019, September: The Society was renamed ‘Australia Alumni Society for International Relations (AASIR)’.
2020, August: The Society was renamed ‘Acton Society’.
