[한-아세안센터: 아세안 토크] A ‘Weak Link’ in the ASEANKorea Ties: Southeast Asia in Korea’s Educational System (한-아세안 협력의 ‘약한 고리’: 한국의 동남아시아 교육)

Abstract (초록)

Education plays an important role in shaping one’s worldview and building interest and perception on a particular topic. With the remarkable development in the ASEAN-Korea relations, understanding the ASEAN region is becoming more important than ever. However, many Koreans’ perception and understanding of ASEAN is not quite sufficient to accommodate this growing partnership due to the lack of education on Southeast Asia in Korea’s educational system. This paper attempts to study the current state of education on Southeast Asia in Korea’s secondary and tertiary education. It investigates the weakness in the teaching on Southeast Asia in Korea’s educational system, and ways to strengthen this ‘weak link’ to support Koreans’ better understanding of the region.

교육은 한 사람의 세계관 형성과 특정 주제에 대해 인식하고 관심을 갖게 하는데 중요한 역할을 한다. 한-아세안 관계의 발전으로 인해 아세안이 크게 주목받는 현재, 동남아시아 지역에 대한 인식과 이해는 점점 중요해지고 있지만 우리가 아세안에 대해 갖는 인식과 이해도는 아직 부족한 수준이다. 이는 한국의 동남아시아 교육이 한국과 아세안을 잇는 ‘약한 고리’로, 커져가는 아세안의 중요성에 비해 충분히 이루어지고 있지 않기 때문이다. 본 보고서는 국내 중·고·대학 교육과정을 통해 한국에서 동남아시아가 어떻게 교육되고 있는지를 살펴본다. 우리 교육과정에서 동남아시아가 위치한 현 주소를 알아보고, 이를 통해 아세안을 이해하는 중요한 연결 고리인 우리 교육과정이 한아세안 관계 발전에 기여할 수 있는 개선방안을 검토해보고자 한다.
